Baseball Conditioning

ZACH FRITZ PITCHINGThe number of baseball related injuries to pitchers of all ages is growing at an alarming rate. Thus, SPS has developed a comprehensive performance enhancement and strength and conditioning program specific to baseball players. By teaching young baseball players how to condition and strengthen their bodies, we hope to assist in the longevity of their playing careers. This program will be strictly for strengthening and conditioning the baseball player's body. There will be NO technique or mechanical pitching or hitting instruction. That instruction is left to pitching and hitting instructors. Athletes interested in pitching and hitting instruction are referred to a pitching and hitting instructor. The program has been designed according to the general performance enhancement and conditioning guidelines presented by the National Academy of Sports Medicine and National Strength and Conditioning Association respectively. SPS has tailored our program to be specifically for baseball according to the forces and torques placed on the shoulder, elbow and total body conditioning. Our plan is to increase balance, flexibility, core strength, as well as the strength, stability, and endurance of the shoulder and elbow joints. The goal of the six or eight-week program is to strengthen the muscles that are firing during the pitch and overhand throwing, as well as the muscles that surround the ligaments and attach to the tendons. The program also increases the player's strength, flexibility, and muscular endurance essential to improving hitting power.

The strength and conditioning program will be tailored to baseball players ages 11-19. During this program, each player will implement muscular strength and endurance exercises as well as baseball specific plyometrics to prepare for the upcoming season. Baseball conditioning is different from other sports because the athlete is not trying to develop as much muscle mass as possible. The baseball player needs to have lean body mass, muscular endurance, and great flexibility. This program is specifically designed to incorporate each of these aspects into the overall performance of the athlete.
